Choose a formation
In Settings → Team, choose between 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2. The 4-3-3 puts three players up front; the 4-4-2 sets up two attacking options and four in midfield; the 3-5-2 places more players in midfield with three defenders behind them.
These differences help you decide where to build your attack. Watch the space left open when you move forward, and do not choose a formation just for its name: test how it fits the players in your squad.
Team mentality
The options are Defensive, Balanced and Attacking. They adjust the team's organisation. An attacking approach can help you chase a result, but you need to watch your defensive cover when possession changes.
If you are learning, start with Balanced and make one change at a time. Compare the movement before changing the formation as well; this makes each adjustment's effect easier to see.
Substitute with a purpose
Open My team from the match menu. Compare player attributes and condition before choosing who comes off and who comes on. A rested player can help maintain intensity, but check that their strengths suit the role you need.
To chase a goal, it may be better to improve passing and finishing. To protect a lead, try to preserve your marking and options for playing out. The substitution should address a visible need in the match.
Return to the match and watch
Close the options and choose Resume in the pause menu. Watch a few passages of play before making another adjustment. If the opponent keeps finding the same channel, try switching the player you control to close that space, as well as changing the team's organisation.
