Feint with a way out

V or R2 / RT performs a feint in your chosen direction. Wait for it to recharge before repeating. Aim for open space and prepare your next action: a pass, a burst of pace or a shot.

Feinting straight into another marker may simply trade one problem for another. On the wing, a change of direction can open up a cross; through the middle, a one-two may be a safer choice.

Sprint when the move calls for it

Hold Shift or R1 / RB to sprint. A light tilt of the stick allows slower movement. Sprinting uses energy, and the player's condition matters when deciding on substitutions.

Changing pace helps you line up your body with the ball before passing or shooting. Instead of sprinting throughout the match, save bursts of pace for attacking space, recovering your position or contesting a loose ball.

Defend without breaking your line

Switch player with Q or L1 / LB. When the opponent is dribbling, hold Pass to press the ball carrier and attempt a standing tackle when in reach. Approach along the line of the ball and keep a defender between the attacker and the goal.

On the keyboard, Z tackles. On a controller, the shoot button becomes a slide tackle when the opponent is dribbling. Going in late or from the wrong side can cause a foul; not every challenge needs a slide tackle.

Fouls, cards and playing a player down

Pushing, with E or L2 / LT, can lead to a foul. You can adjust how strict the referee is in the settings. Reckless challenges may receive cards, and a sending-off leaves the team a player short.

A goalkeeper holding the ball is protected: challenging him in that situation can also be a foul. When he has the ball at his feet, the challenge is treated differently. Read the play before approaching.
