Short and long passes
Use X or ✕ / A. Point towards your teammate and release the button to pass. A small charge looks for a closer option; a larger charge reaches options further away in that direction.
Watch the line between the players. Power does not make the ball pass through a defender. To switch play safely, pass backwards or choose another angle before attempting the long pass. You take control of the receiver, who can start running towards the ball early.
One-twos with L1 / LB
Hold L1 / LB and press ✕ / A; on the keyboard, use R. Your player passes and continues the move while the teammate tries to return the ball first time when the lane is clear. The return depends on the space available and should not be treated as a guaranteed pass through the defence.
Try a one-two near an isolated marker, with a teammate ahead and to the side. If another defender is blocking the return, prepare an alternative. Offside still applies.
Through balls and balls over the top
T or △ / Y plays a ball along the ground ahead of a runner. While you charge, attackers may begin running in behind the defence. A larger charge puts the ball further ahead.
G or L1 / LB + △ / Y attempts a lofted through ball. Watch the space between the defence and the goalkeeper: a ball played without enough room can be intercepted. If there is no free runner, the move may produce a short pass or a ball into space.
Crosses and first-time passes
C or □ / X sends the ball through the air. Near the penalty area, a smaller charge favours the near post; a larger one looks for the far post. Prepare a header with Shoot when the attacker is in a position to reach the ball.
To pass first time along the ground, release Pass before the ball arrives. At set pieces such as throw-ins and goal kicks, the controls follow the restart options; do not expect every open-play combination to behave the same way.
